Selenium Linked To Mental Performance

Selenium supplementation may benefit the cognitive functioning of older individuals. This large study shows that selenium levels are linked to mental performance.

In a study involving 1,024 participants aged 65 years or more in the InCHIANTI population-based cohort study, results indicate that plasma selenium levels may be inversely associated with performance in neurological tests (timed performance-based assessments) assessing coordination and motor speed. The authors suggest, "Prospective studies are needed to further investigate the effects of selenium on SN [striato nigral system] dysfunction."
